For decades, the East Coast Asian American Student Union has been dedicated to advancing the needs of the Asian American student demographic. The annual ECAASU Conference brings hundreds of undergraduate students together to discuss issues of racial identity, discrimination, and empowerment. This year’s conference will be held Feb. 22-24 at Columbia University.

“ECAASU is an incredible opportunity for students from across the country to come together and dialogue about the issues that face their communities,” explained Derek Mong, Executive Director for the 2012 ECAASU Conference at Duke University. “The hope is that they will find common ground and workable solutions for these issues.”

Students will have the opportunity to attend workshops highlighting a range of topics, from Asian American masculinity to
the harm of microaggressions and the taboo of mental health issues in the Asian American community. Keynote speakers this year include Norman Mineta, Secretary of Transportation under President George W. Bush; Curtis Chin, co-founder of the Asian American Writers Workshop and Asian Pacific Americans for Progress; and Richard Lui, previous news anchor at CNN Worldwide and current news anchor on MSNBC. Various popular Asian American entertainers are also slated to perform, including David So, Jason Chen, Clara Chung, and Taiyo Na & Magnetic North.
